How Does a Dehumidifier Work?

Best Dehumidifier Reviews – If you have ever poured yourself an ice-cold glass of water and left it sitting on a table top and found a wet ring on the table when you picked it up, then you’ve seen the basic concept of a dehumidifier at work.

The purpose of a dehumidifier is to pull moisture out of the air. The science behind the ability to do this states that air at a given temperature can only hold a certain amount of water vapor. So once the air reaches its saturation point for water vapor–100% humidity–then the water begins to condense on solid objects. Also, the colder the air is, the less water vapor it can hold. This is the reason why hot climates, such as those in the tropics, are so much more humid than cold climates, such as those found in the high mountains. So a dehumidifier takes the warm moist air and cools it down enough to where the water vapor condenses into liquid water and comes out of the air. It’s the opposite of evaporation.

A dehumidifier has three basic parts. The first part is a fan. The reason for a fan is simple enough: the unit needs something that will draw air in and blow it through. The second part is a refrigerated coil. This is the part that does all of the work. As the air is drawn into the unit by the fan, it is then blown over the coiled metal tube. A refrigerant is pumped through the coil to make the metal ice cold, which chills air that comes in contact with it to the point at which the water vapor can condense. Then, just as with the glass of ice cold water mentioned earlier, droplets of water form on the coil and begin to drip. This brings us to the third part if the dehumidifier: the collection unit. This is merely a container for holding all the water that drips off the metal coils. Some containers are bigger than others, depending on how much water the dehumidifier can pull out of the air. These containers are removable, allowing you to empty the water whenever it gets full, but some also have places where you can attach a hose to continually drain the container.
